Jacobus de Altavilla biography
Jacobus de Altavilla, Jacobus de Alta Villa, Jacobus de Eltville, Jacobus von Eltville, Jacobs von Eltville, Jacques d'Eltville, Jacques de Altavilla, Jakob von Eltville, Jacob din Eltville
James of
Eltville was born in Eltville (Rheingau) probably in the
second quarter of the fourteenth century. He began his studies at the
neighboring Cistercian abbey of Eberbach and continued his formation at St.
Bernard college in Paris where he lectured on the Sentences during the academic year 1369-1370. In 1373 he became a
doctor of Theology.
Ms. Cambrai, Bibliothèque Municipale 570, f.
133v: sic est finis totius questionis et per consequens totius primi libri

In 1372 he
was already abbot of Eberbach, where he welcomed his friend Henry of
Langenstein in 1382. According to some sources, he was close to Matthew of
Kraków.
James of
Eltville died in November 1393, as his gravestone in the old abbey church of
Eberbach indicates. His
gravestone became a pilgrimage site in the 17th century, as Charles De Visch
mentions at the end of MS Bruges, Bibliothèque municipale 181, f. 252v:
Fuit hic author religiosus
ac postea abbas monasterii Ebirbacensis in Ringoia, Moguntine dioecesis. Natus
in Altavilla (civitacula dicto monasterio vicina). Visitatur autem adhuc ejus
sepultura in capitulo ejusdem monasterii, cum aliorum 23m abbatum sepulturis,
estque ejusdem ibidem adhuc celebris memoria. Ita testor. [S.] F.
